
Five top-20 performances secured in opener

The Sam Houston State men's and women's cross country programs began the 2016 fall slate on Friday, notching five combined top-20 performances at the SFA Lumberjack SLC Preview in Nacogdoches.
Senior Ana Moreno captured third place in the 3,200-meter run behind a mark of 11:25.88 for the women, cutting 34 seconds off her 2013 time at the event while finishing as the top Southland Conference competitor in the event. The Magnolia product only trailed runners from Texas and Houston.
Fellow senior Evan Arambula used a time of 15:45.05 in the 5K run to finish fifth for the men, also securing the top spot among league competitors which included Stephen F. Austin and Houston Baptist. Teammate Grant Buley took 10th at 16:01.58 followed by Jeffrey Moore in 16th at 16:17.58.
Senior Olivia Olguin ran 11:45.97 to take 11th while freshman Kassandra Luna, competing in her first cross country event, secured 29th place with a mark of 12:43.79. She was followed by Briana McCall (13:00.09) in 31st and junior Holly Pierce in 36th (13.19.13).
Robert Monticone went 27th for the men (16:57.29) and John Bounds took 33rd at 17:15.34. The event was the first of four races for the Bearkats leading up to the Southland Conference Championships in Nacogdoches on Oct. 28.
Sam Houston returns to action in two weeks in Corpus Christi at the Islander Splash on Sept. 16. From there, the squad will take part in back-to-back races in College Station.
