HUNTSVILLE – One of the longest running pre-conference tournaments in the nation will come to an end after this season, and the Sam Houston State Bearkats will be a part of the Great Alaska Shootout's swansong this week.
The Kats will kick off the 40th and final GCI Great Alaska Shootout on Wednesday when they take on Central Michigan at 5:30 pm CT at the Alaska Airlines Center on the campus of the University of Alaska-Anchorage.
Sam Houston will get three games out of the event, taking on either Charleston or Cal Poly in their second game. The other side of the eight-team bracket includes host Alaska-Anchorage, Cal Bakersfield, Santa Clara and Idaho, who the Kats just faced off on Saturday in Moscow.
All games of the GCI Great Alaska Shootout will be aired statewide in Alaska on GCI channel 907, but for those staying in the Lower 48, the tournament can be watched in its entirety for a $30 fee through FloSports. Live stats will also be available and fans can also get live updates by following @BearkatsMBB on Twitter.
The Kats are off to a 2-1 start to the young season after falling at Big Sky favorite Idaho on Saturday, 64-54, after a late Vandal run surged them past Sam Houston. Chris Galbreath Jr. had 20 points in the game and is currently leading Sam Houston with 15.3 points and 7.3 rebounds per game.
Meanwhile, the high-scoring Chippewas come in at 2-1 and averaging nearly 93 points per game. They own a pair of non-Division I wins with their lone loss coming by just seven points in Ann Arbor to the Michigan Wolverines.
They sport five players averaging double figures through three games, led by David DiLeo's 15.0 points per game. Another player to watch is Shawn Roundtree, who is averaging 13.3 points per game and pumped in 21 in the loss to Michigan.
SERIES vs CENTRAL MICHIGAN
This will be Sam Houston's first ever meeting with the Chippewas.
