BEAUMONT – Sam Houston State returns to action on Thursday, making the short drive southeast to face a surging Lamar squad. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. with the game being broadcast on ESPN3.
After picking up its first win of the season on Jan. 28 against Southeastern Louisiana, the Bearkats look to snap a two-game skid overall and rebound from a 70-44 loss to the Cardinals on Jan. 7.
The Kats have been led offensively by senior Jasmine McCants and freshman Jenniffer Oramas, who have posted 8.8 points per game and 8.2 points per game respectively. On the defensive end, Kiera McKinney ranks second in the Southland for blocks with 32.
Sam Houston will be challenged by a Lamar program entering Thursday on a 4-game win streak. The Cardinals lead the nation in steals per game (14.0), turnovers forced (24.76 per game) and turnover margin (9.24).
The Bearkats are in the midst of playing three-of-four games on the road. The team fell 78-56 to first-place Abilene Christian on Saturday as the Wildcats sunk 10 3-pointers and forced 21 Bearkats turnovers.
Despite its struggles in league play, the Bearkats rank first in the Southland for defensive rebounds (26.7 per game) and are being led by sophomore Lydia Baxter's six rebounds per game. The Austin native has produced both double-doubles this season for Sam Houston.
Baxter and company will be tasked with slowing down Lamar's Moe Kinard who ranks fifth in the league for 3-ponters per game (2.5) and sixth in points per game (16.6). The Kats have their own threats from behind the arc with Oramas and Angela Delaney each shooting 38 percent from downtown.
