HUNTSVILLE – After suffering a tough loss on Wednesday, the Sam Houston State women's basketball team will make the short trip to Houston Baptist on Saturday looking for a win over the Huskies at Sharp Gym.
The game is set to tip off at 2:00 p.m. at Sharp Gym and can be watched on the HBUHuskies.com YouTube channel. Fans can follow along via live stats, or get updates by following @BearkatsWBB on Twitter.
The Kats put three players in double figures but allowed 31 points to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in the third quarter on Wednesday in a loss to the Islanders that squared the Bearkat record at 2-2 in the SLC and 7-7 overall. Now the Kats will look to push their record back on the winning side of things against HBU, who has sandwiched double-digit defeats to Lamar, Nicholls and Abilene Christian around a win at Sharp Gym over New Orleans on January 5.
Amanda Johnson's 12.1 points per game leads the HBU attack, while Megan Valez-Crader and Sophie Taylor are each averaging in double figures as well.
They'll be up against the Bearkats who still rank in the top four in the league in scoring as a team and are forcing 22.5 turnovers per game. Jaylonn Walker's 15.7 points per game is still the fourth-best in the SLC, but freshman Amber Leggett is right behind her in conference-only games with an average of 14.8 points and 6.5 rebounds per game.
SERIES vs HOUSTON BAPTIST
SHSU owns an 8-5 record against HBU, including 7-3 since the Huskies joined the Southland Conference. The Kats had lost three of four in the series in 2016 and 2017, but have since answered with three straight victories, including sweeping the season series a year ago.
