NEW ORLEANS – Jenniffer Oramas reached the 1,000-point mark for her career and the Sam Houston State Bearkats had zero issues with winning their second game of Southland Conference play on Saturday afternoon, blasting New Orleans, 78-46, at Lakefront Arena.
Â
Oramas entered the game needing 15 points to reach her milestone and got there with her second 3-pointer of the night in the third quarter. She finished with a game-high 19 points and dished out six assists, becoming just the 17th player in the history of Bearkat women's basketball to reach 1,000 points in a career.
Â
She was one of three Bearkats (6-4, 2-0 SLC) to reach double figures, joined also by Courtney Cleveland (15) and Kiera McKinney (10) as SHSU dominated the paint by a 40-20 margin. They also held a +7 margin on the glass, led primarily by La'Sha Haynes' 12 boards, a mark one shy of her career high.
Â
The Kats also got nine points from Rachel Harrell who hit a trio of threes in the first half, while Cleveland added eight rebounds and hit 7-for-8 from the foul line in what turned out to be a big day for the transfer from Pratt CC.
Â
Things were never truly in doubt as SHSU led 21-9 at the end of the first quarter and 42-17 at the midway point of the afternoon. Meanwhile, the Privateers (3-7, 0-2 SLC) only reached double figures in one of the four quarters and were led by Dionjhae Thomas' 10 points.
Â
Through two games of SLC play, the Kats are one of five teams to open up 2-0 (joined by ACU, SFA, AMCC and Lamar) and have opened up with two wins in league play for the first time since the 2012-13 team started 4-0.
Â
The Kats will now observe the Christmas holiday before hitting the floor on December 30 in Huntsville vs Wiley College to close out non-conference play. They will then host McNeese on January 2 at Johnson Coliseum.
