Softball splits again at Stetson Classic

STETSON, Fla. — The Sam Houston State softball team once again split a pair of games during day two of the Stetson Leadoff Classic in Florida Saturday.

The Bearkats (2-2) defeated George Mason for the second time in the tournament Saturday morning, then lost to the host Hatters in the night cap.

SHSU defeated George Mason 7-6 in eight innings in game one Friday and fell to Boston University 9-3.

The Kats close the tournament with a rematch against the Terriers at 9 a.m. Sunday.

Game 1 • Sam Houston State 6, George Mason 1

The Bearkats fell behind early but came storming back to knock off George Mason 6-1 in second-day action at the Stetson Leadoff Classic Saturday.

After George Mason scored its only run of the game in the second inning, junior Brooke Malia homered to left in the bottom of the third for what would prove to be the game winner to put the Kats up 2-1. Megan McDonald led off the inning with a single.

Junior Darby Fitzpatrick (1-0) picked up the victory in the circle, allowing only two hits in five innings. Junior Annie Bailey picked her first save of the season by tossing two no-hit innings.

McDonald's two-run single in the bottom of the fourth pushed Sam Houston State's lead to 4-1. Junior Sheridan Fisher, who was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, and sophomore Regan Dunn, who walked, came across to score on McDonald's hit to right field.

The Bearkats added two more insurance runs in the sixth on a double by senior Tiffany Thompson and a single up the middle by Malia.

Junior Madilyn Weatherly, Dunn and junior Brooklyn Devine all hit safely in the win.

Game 2 • Stetson 3, Sam Houston State 2

Sam Houston State fell short of rallying past host Stetson Saturday evening in its second game of the day.

Senior Hunter Ervin drove in a run in the top of the second with an RBI single to left field to get the Bearkats on the board after the Hatters scored three runs in the first inning off a two-run home run and an error.

Sam Houston State pulled within 3-2 with another run in the top of the fourth. Madilyn Weatherly led off with a single and pinch runner Brooklyn Devine advanced to second on a wild pitch to set up an RBI single up the middle by junior Sheridan Fisher.

After giving up the three runs in the first, sophomore pitcher Regan Dunn (1-2) settled down in the circle and tossed five scoreless innings to keep the Bearkats within striking distance.

Senior Megan McDonald and Ervin each had two hits in the loss.
