DALLAS — The Sam Houston softball squad landed one player on the preseason All-Conference USA team, the league announced on Thursday.
Â
Junior right-handed pitcher Abigail Young enters the year fresh off a breakout sophomore campaign in which she finished with conference best 1.66 ERA and an 8-6 overall record. Four of her wins came during conference play in back in April, including a strong outing in a 3-1 win over then-No. 25 Liberty as she was named to the 2025 All-CUSA first team.Â
Â
Young threw 109 2/3 innings last season, with 70 2/3 coming in league games, and allowed just 22 earned runs in conference play. She also recorded two saves, including one in a 6-2 win over UTEP. She had 16 starts and struck out 59 batters, picking up her first win in a 5-0 shutout against UTSA.
Â
The Bearkats have also been selected to finish fifth in the preseason poll as voted on by the league's coaches. Sam Houston received 86 points in the poll and come in behind Liberty, Louisiana Tech, Jax State and Western Kentucky in the top five followed by Delaware, FIU, NM State and Middle Tennessee.
Â
Missouri State and UTEP tied for the 10th spot while Kennesaw State rounded out the predicted order of finish.
