Kats wrap up 2026 season with loss to NM State

NEWARK, Del. — Sam Houston's season came to an end Wednesday afternoon with a 3-0 loss to New Mexico State on the opening day of the Conference USA tournament.Â
The Bearkats (29-27, 13-15 CUSA) opened strong, holding the Aggies (27-25, 17-11 CUSA) scoreless in the first inning. New Mexico State responded in the second when Kendal Lunar hit a solo home run to take an early lead.Â
Sam Houston kept the Aggies off the board in the third. In the fourth, First Team All-CUSA selection Bella Perez led off with a single to left-center field, but the Bearkats were unable to capitalize.Â
New Mexico State extended its lead in the bottom of the fourth with back-to-back solo home runs from Lunar and Tamara Carranza, pushing the advantage to 3-0.Â
Both teams remained scoreless over the next two innings.Â
The Bearkats threatened in the top of the seventh. Tricia Yarotsky singled to left field, followed by a single from Morgan Holliday that put runners in scoring position. However, Sam Houston was unable to bring a run home.Â
Second Team All-CUSA pitcher Tiffany Sanchez started in the circle for Sam Houston and recorded three strikeouts. Amy Abke entered in relief and added three strikeouts, allowing no hits or runs.Â
Sam Houston closes the 2026 season with a 29-27 overall record.Â
