HUNTSVILLE — Sam Houston head coach Garrett Valis has announced the addition of Dariana Orme as the program's new pitching coach, bringing an elite playing pedigree and a wealth of high-level experience to the Bearkat softball program.
Â
"I am extremely excited to add Dariana Orme to our staff in the pitching coach role. Her combination of competitiveness and pure joy for the game is infectious," Valis said. "She also comes from a program that operates with similar values and creates a positive growth environment, so I look for her to build on the already high-achieving staff that we have."
Â
Orme arrives in Huntsville after serving as pitching coach at Charleston Southern University, where she led the development of the Buccaneers' pitching staff while also working closely with the program's catchers. In addition to her work with the battery, she played an integral role in recruiting, scouting, game preparation, practice planning, bullpen development and individualized player development.
Â
Known for her holistic approach to coaching, Orme has established a reputation for developing student-athletes both on and off the field. Her coaching philosophy emphasizes the mental side of the game, helping athletes build confidence, resilience, self-awareness, preparation habits and a competitive mindset. Through individualized mentorship and relationship-driven coaching, she has invested heavily in the personal and athletic growth of her players.
Â
"It is an honor to join such an amazing coaching staff and program at Sam Houston State University," Orme said. "I am eager to invest in the program, support the growth of our student-athletes and be part of something meaningful at Sam. Proud to be a Bearkat."
Â
Prior to entering the coaching ranks, Orme enjoyed an illustrious collegiate career spanning both the Mountain West and Big 12 conferences. Widely regarded as one of the nation's premier pitchers during her playing days, she established herself as a dominant force in the circle while competing at Fresno State and Baylor.
Â
During her collegiate career, Orme accumulated more than 400 innings pitched, over 300 strikeouts, 28 career shutouts and 11 complete games while competing against some of the nation's top programs. Her standout 2023 campaign at Baylor included the program's first seven-inning perfect game against Stephen F. Austin and a no-hitter against nationally ranked Maryland. She also played a pivotal role in Baylor's victory over then-No. 1 Oklahoma.
Â
Among her numerous accolades, Orme earned NFCA First Team All-Region honors and All-Big 12 Second Team recognition in 2023 after being named NFCA National Pitcher of the Week. She was a three-time Big 12 Player of the Week selection and earned NFCA All-Region honors twice during her career. Entering the 2024 season, she was recognized nationally as a member of the USA Softball Player of the Year Top 50 Watch List.
Â
A graduate of Baylor University, Orme earned bachelor's degrees in corporate communication and sociology before completing a Master of Arts in Theology of Sport. Her unique combination of academic preparation, elite playing experience and commitment to athlete development positions her among the sport's rising young coaches.
Â
As one of the game's emerging coaching talents, Orme brings championship-level experience, a proven player-development background and a passion for helping student-athletes grow as competitors, leaders and people to the Bearkat softball program.
