HUNTSVILLE – Sam Houston State women's basketball coach Ravon Justice continued to add to her roster on Tuesday, announcing the addition graduate transfer guard Monica Barefield for the 2020-21 season.
Â
Monica Barefield • G • 5-2 • Joliet, Ill. • Joliet Central HS / Iona
Justice on Barefield: " Monica will bring experience  and leadership to our program. She plays with a lot of energy and excitement and has the ability to be a presence in our offense as well as apply heavy ball pressure on defense."
Â
Barefield adds to the Kats' stable of guards, bringing talent and experience to the roster as she joins the team from Iona. The Joliet, Ill., native will be immediately eligible with one year to play as a graduate transfer following two years with the Gaels that came after a two-year stint at Garden City CC in Kansas.
Â
The 5-2 guard started a pair of games last year for Iona, playing in 29 games each of the past two seasons. She averaged 7.1 points, 1.4 assists and 1.9 rebounds in 26.8 minutes in 2018-19 and followed that up in 2019-20 with 5.0 points, 1.3 assists and 1.6 rebounds per game.
Â
She missed the 2017-18 season at Garden City CC due to injury, but averaged 13.2 points and 2.3 assists in 29 games as a true freshman in 2016-17. That came after averaging 19.5 points per game at Joliet Central HS where she earned all-league honors and an honorable mention all-state nod.
Â
Barefield is the second graduate transfer the Kats have added for the 2020-21 season and the sixth addition to the roster after bidding farewell to six seniors following the conclusion of the 2019-20 season.
