Three former Sam Houston State student-athletes recently graduated together from the Houston Police Academy.
Ana Moreno, Nicole Aponte and Garrett Larson wrapped up around several months of training in August after entering the academy right before the coronavirus pandemic swept across the state. All three SHSU graduates were standouts on the track and field and cross country teams.
Among their many accomplishments in the orange and white, Moreno and Aponte both captured Southland Conference Student-Athlete of the Year awards for their outstanding work in the classroom and while competing in their respective events.
Moreno did it for cross country in 2016 after finishing as runner-up at the SLC Cross Country Championships, while Aponte was honored for track and field in 2017 following a gold-medal performance in the 1,500-meter run and a silver in the 800 meters at the league's outdoor championships.
Larson was a decorated pole vaulter at SHSU. He earned medals multiple times during his Bearkat career, including second-place finishes at the 2016 indoor and 2018 outdoor SLC championships. He was also an SLC all-academic selection.
