Tennis takes down UTRGV 6-1

CORPUS CHRISTI — The Sam Houston tennis team cruised to a 6-1 victory over UTRGV at the Henry Tennis Monday.

The Bearkats improved to 9-2 on the season with the win, which was played at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The match was originally scheduled for Feb. 19 in Huntsville but was postponed.

Sunday's match against the Islanders was also postponed due to inclement weather.

Junior Sahaja Yamalapalli remained undefeated at No. 1 singles by knocking off Kristyna Mamicova 6-1, 6-2. Yamalapalli is now 10-0 at No. 1 singles.

Junior Karla De La Luz Montalvo pushed her record to 8-3 by defeating Isabelle Bahr 6-1, 7-6 at No. 2 singles, while sophomore Isidora Zivkovic improved her season record to 8-2 by topping Valeria Montero 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 3 spot.

Senior Constandena Nicolaou defeated Ana Platisa 6-3, 4-6, 10-6 at No. 4 singles to improve to 8-0, and freshman Sahithi Vutukuru won against Katarina Sasaroga 6-2, 6-4 at No. 5.

Yamalapalli and junior Roos Gerritsen clinched the doubles point by defeating Mamicova and Montero 6-3 in the No. 1 position. Montalvo and sophomore Petra Kaszas took No. 3 doubles with a 6-4 victory against Platisa and Lea Karren.

The Bearkats host New Orleans at 1 p.m. Friday at the McAdams Tennis Center.
