HUNTSVILLE – Just hours after sweeping Houston Baptist, the Sam Houston volleyball team swept its way past San Diego State in the finale of the first day of the Bearkat Invitational at Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum.
The Bearkats (2-0) were in control the whole way, hitting .299 against the Aztecs (0-2), who were also swept by HBU earlier in the day.
No player registered in double figures in kills, but the Kats were dominant at the net, out blocking SDSU 15.0-3.0 and contributing to the Aztecs hitting a paltry .029.
McKenzie Morvant led the way at the net, setting a new career high with nine blocks to go with six kills. De'Janae Gilmore was not far behind with six blocks to go with eight kills on just 11 swings, while Ashley Lewis just missed out on her second double-double of the day with a match-high nine kills and 13 digs.
Morgan Janda turned in a well-rounded match of her own, dishing out 25 assists while also putting home four kills and picking up three blocks from her setter spot.
Sam Houston will now have a quick turnaround before taking on both HBU and SDSU again on Saturday in the finale of the 2-day event. The Kats will open up play on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. vs San Diego State before battling HBU at 4:00 p.m.
Each game can be watched on the WAC Digital Network.
