Red Raiders outlast Kats in tournament finale

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Sam Houston volleyball team had Texas Tech on the ropes on Saturday morning, but could not finish it off as the Red Raiders picked up a 3-1 win on the final day of the Green Wave Invitational at Bartow Arena.
The Kats (7-5) had things tied at 1-1 and held late leads in both Sets 3 and 4 before the Red Raiders (10-3) managed to put together rallies each time.
Both teams were at their best offensively throughout the day with Texas Tech hitting .338 for the match with the Kats hitting .240. Kenna Sauer led all players with 30 kills for the Red Raiders, misfiring only five times on 64 swings.
For Sam Houston, Ashley Lewis led a trio of Kats in double-figure kills with 17 kills to go with eight digs and three blocks. Catherine Krieger capped a strong weekend with 15 kills on 30 tries, and Breanne Chausse picked up a double-double with 12 kills and 10 digs.
Morgan Janda added four kills to her 46 assists and team-high 16 digs, and Hannah Baker finished with 12 digs. At the net, De'Janae Gilmore led the Kats with five blocks to go with eight kills.
The weekend in Birmingham concludes non-conference play for the Kats. They will now enjoy an extended break before opening up WAC play on September 30 in Huntsville when they host Tarleton.
