Kats welcome 2023 with pair of wins

HUNTSVILLE — Sam Houston kicked off 2023 with a bang by picking up a pair of wins over Prairie View at the McAdams Tennis Center on Sunday.

The Bearkats defeated the Panthers 4-1 in the first dual match then followed it up with a 5-2 victory in the finale. This is the third consecutive season Sam Houston has gotten off to a 2-0 start.

The Kats won the doubles point in the opening match. Anastasia Khokhlova and McKenzy Byfield defeated Ruju Chauhan and Salma Villalobos 6-0 at No. 3, and Megan Basson and Paula Cerda secured the point with a 6-4 win at No. 1 over Victoria Castillo and Mahogani Green.

Basson captured a victory at No. 1 singles by topping Gabrielle Leslie 6-0, 6-3. Cerda made quick work of Castillo with a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 2.

Vianne Schwab defeated Green 6-2, 6-4 at No. 4 to seal the victory. Aaliyah Hohmann and Byfield were both winning their matches but did not finish after the Bearkats earned the win.

Sam Houston dominated singles to win the second dual match.

Basson knocked off Leslie again 6-3, 6-1, and Cerda cruised past Aleyla Wooten 6-1, 6-3. Khokhlova lost her first match of the day at No. 3, but bounced back to defeat Castillo 6-4, 6-2.

Schwab also earned a point for the Kats with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Green. Hohmann dropped her first set at No. 5 to Chauhan 3-6 then won the second set 7-5 and the tiebreaker.

Sam Houston returns to action Friday on the road at Texas A&M at 4 p.m.
