CELINA — The Sam Houston softball team jumped out to an early lead to cruise past South Dakota 6-1 at the Tracy Beard College Classic on Friday.
The Bearkats (3-3) got on the board in the first inning when
Ellie Grill drew a lead-off walk and stole second base. She moved to third on a single by
Brailey Wasik and scored on a wild pitch.
Sam Houston added two more runs in the third when Grill once again got things started with a double to left field. Wasik hit a one-out single to the pitcher and pinch runner
Haley Mountain stole second to set up two-run single by
Brodie Quinlan.
Grill drove in a run with a single in the fourth and two more in the sixth on a ground out by Wasik and an RBI double by Quinlan.
That was plenty of run support for the Sam Houston pitching staff. Starter
Regan Dunn (1-0) allowed one run on four hits in four innings with five strikeouts and Emma Guidon allowed one hit with three strikeouts in three innings to earn the save.
The Bearkats play UT Arlington on Saturday at 11 a.m. and North Texas at 1:30 p.m.
