
Kats fall in overtime at UTRGV

EDINBURG — Sam Houston suffered a heart-breaking 65-61 loss in overtime to UTRGV on Saturday.
The Bearkats (12-14 overall, 8-8 in WAC) led 48-40 heading into the fourth quarter. The Vaqueros used a 15-7 run to close the gap and tie the game at 55 with 24 seconds left.
Sam Houston had one last chance to win the game in regulation, but Tierney Coleman was unable to get a layup to fall at the buzzer.
UTRGV used a 6-1 run to take command with a 63-57 lead with just under a minute to play. The Bearkats never recovered.
Madelyn Batista led Sam Houston with 17 points and nine rebounds, and Mikayla Woods scored 14. Kaylee Jefferson added 13 points, and Coleman finished with 12.
The Bearkats have a quick turnaround when they host Abilene Christian on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
