HUNTSVILLE — The Sam Houston men's basketball team has added a transfer from TCU for the 2023-24 season, head coach Chris Mudge announced Wednesday.
Â
Souleymane Doumbia, a 6-11 forward from Abidjan, Ivory Coast, has signed with the Bearkats. The 240-pound senior was the No. 2 rated center and No. 4 overall JUCO prospect when he signed with TCU after two seasons at Navarro.
Â
"First and foremost, Souley is an amazing young man whose story of perseverance and hard work is inspiring," Mudge said. "His level of athleticism, toughness, size and skill is going to be a game changer in helping us compete at the top of Conference USA. As one of the best junior college players in the country coming out of Navarro, he was able to show how he can affect the game on both ends at a high level. We are excited to be the coaches who get to help him be the best player and man that he can be."
Â
This past season, Doumbia saw action in 21 games for the Horned Frogs, playing a total of 24 minutes. He averaged 0.9 points and 1.0 rebounds per game and scored a season-high eight points against Mississippi Valley State.
Â
Doumbia averaged 1.0 points and 0.8 rebounds per game as a sophomore at TCU and had career-highs in points (nine) and rebounds (six) against Grambling.
Â
In his final season at Navarro, he averaged 4.0 points and 3.5 rebounds while shooting  48.6 percent from the field. Doumbia scored a season-high 13 points against Tyler Junior College.
Â
During his freshman season in 2019-20, Doumbia averaged 10.4 points and 6.9 rebounds per game. He scored over 20 points in three games including a 32-point, 12-rebound performance against Lee College and posted six double-doubles. He also blocked 60 shots during the season, a Navarro record.
