Lead gets away late from Kats in loss

EL PASO — Fourth quarter woes came back to haunt the Sam Houston women's basketball team in a 66-61 loss on the road at UTEP on Saturday.
The Bearkats (5-13) are still searching for that first Conference USA win. Sam Houston dropped to 0-6 in league play and have lost 10 in a row overall.
The first half was back and forth until the Miners were able to use a 7-0 run to take a 36-34 lead into halftime.
Sam Houston started piecing things together in the third quarter. After tying the game, the Bearkats took a 50-44 advantage when Kaylee Jefferson scored on a second-chance layup and hit a 3-pointer with 1:54 left in the period.
Jefferson knocked down another jumper to give Sam Houston its biggest lead of the day 52-44.
The Bearkats went cold in the fourth quarter, and UTEP seized the opportunity. The Miners closed the game on a 7-0 run over the course of the final four minutes as Sam Houston went scoreless.
Jefferson led the Kats with 16 points, and Shanti Henry scored a career-high 13. Sydnee Kemp finished with 11 points, and Elena Houghton had a team-high seven rebounds.
Sam Houston returns home to host Western Kentucky on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
