
Kats close fall on West Coast

SEASIDE, Calif. – The Sam Houston men's golf team closed its fall season strong, finishing third at the Leadership and Golf Collegiate Championship this week at Bayonet & Blackhorse Golf Course on the Monterey Peninsula.
Bret Gray led the way with a second-place individual finish, opening with a bogey-free round of 66 in Round 1 before firing 75-70 over his final 36 holes. He finished at -5 overall, while Pacific's Jacob Astiazaran took the individual title at -8.
Pacific also took the overall team title at –9, shooting –13 as a team in the final round. BYU, ranked #35 nationally, was the only other team to finish ahead of the Bearkats.
Gene Chaikangwal and Hugo Trommetter each turned in top-10 finishes of their own at -2, coming in a tie for 8th. Chaikangwal went 73-74 in the first two rounds before surging 19 spots on the leaderboard on Wednesday with a 67. Trommetter, meanwhile, was under par in each of his first two rounds with a 67 and a 70 before closing with a 75 in Round 3.
Josh German competed as an individual and also under par twice, sandwiching rounds of 70 and 69 around a Round 2 outlier of 82, finishing in 31st place individually at +5 for the week.
Ethan Dufresne and Alex Malanga rounded out the team scoring for the Kats, finishing in 63rd and 73rd place, respectively. Dufresne turned in rounds of 74-75-81 to end at +14, while Malanga 81-74-78 to close at +17.
The Kats will now observe the winter break before resuming play in the spring where they will resume play on February 10 by hosting the Bentwater Intercollegiate.
