HUNTSVILLE – The Sam Houston women's tennis team opened its new home at the Chuck and Wanda Beckner Tennis Center by dominating a field of three long-time Texas rivals at the annual Bearkat Fall Invitational this weekend.
The women posted victories in 15 of their 17 singles in the three-day event. The Kats went 5-for-5 vs UTRGV, 3-for-5 vs UTSA, and 6-for-6 vs Lamar. Sam Houston also won four out of the eight doubles matches contested during the tournament.
"This was a stellar tournament for our Bearkats. There couldn't have been a better way for our ladies to perform in the first competition in our new home," Sam Houston head coach
Rob Hubbard said. "Every one of our visiting coaches raved about how impressive our new tennis facility is. Thank you to Chuck and Wanda Beckner for their wonderful support."
The six-court complex is a gift from long time tennis fans Charles Beckner and his wife Wanda. The Beckners both are avid tennis fans and have a deep-rooted passion for the sport. The new stadium replaced the McAdams Tennis Complex which has been the home for Bearkat tennis program for 40 years.
"Our young ladies showed me they want to compete with their performances this weekend," Hubbard said. "They all fought hard especially playing on their new home court. "
The 2024-25 edition of the Bearkat tennis team features only one returning letterwinner with junior
Aaliyah Hohmann. The other five players are transfers with

Nayuma Subba (Fresno Pacific) now wearing orange and white.
Subba posted a pair of singles victories competing in the number one flight. Jevicky, Venkata Krishnan and Hohmann all were undefeated 3-0 in the number two, four and five/six flights, respectively. Schnabel and Sadadinovic both went 2-1 at the number three and five/six positions. Sadadinovic's only loss was to teammate Aaliyah Hohman.
The weekend's action marked the third tournament for the Kats of this fall. Sam Houston will complete its 2024 fall schedule when they travel west for the UTEP Invitational in El Paso November 1-3.
