Tennis gets win over LSU Shreveport

SHREVEPORT, La. – After an eight-day lay-off from dual match play the Sam Houston women's tennis team roared to a 5-2 victory over LSU Shreveport at the Pilot Courts Sunday afternoon.
Paula Cerda, India Fenieys, Roberta Sechi. Linn Svaerd and Vianne Schwab all won their singles matches in straight sets as the Kats even their season record at 4-4. The Pilots dropped to 3-5. Sunday's contest was a rain make-up of a dual match originally scheduled for Feb. 11.
"It was good to get back into action again with a victory," Sam Houston head coach Rob Hubbard said.
Cerda defeated Angela Basto 6-2, 6-0 in the number one position. The senior upped her dual match record to 7-1 and posted singles win number 11 for the season.
Sahithi Vutukuru forced a 10-point match-deciding tie-breaker after dropping her opening set at number two singles. She won the second frame 6-2. Pierina Lescher picked up the Pilots' only point with a 7-3 win in the deciding tie-breaker.
India Fenieys blanked Lidia Gomez 6-0, 6-0 at number three. Roberta Sechi dominated the number four singles with a 6-0 6-2 mark in the number four match. Linn Svaerd dropped only one game in a 6-1 6-0 performance at the five versus Sara Sanchez. Vianne Schwab's earned the six position point with a 6-2 6-0 performance versus Ana Mondrot.
Cerda and Svaerd picked up the Kats' only doubles victory as they shut out Daniela Maldonado and Ana Mondrot 6-0. The Pilots opened the match by taking the doubles point with wins at the two and three positions.
Sam Houston takes to the road again Tuesday as they travel to Houston to renew the Kats' annual rivalry with the Rice Owls.
