TEXARKANA, Ark. – The Sam Houston men's golf team came up a round short of the finals of the Conference USA Championship match, falling to Liberty in the match-play semifinals on Thursday morning at Texarkana Country Club.Â
The Bearkats had surged to the No. 2 seed in match play by shooting 18-under par in the final two rounds of stroke play, but Liberty led for the bulk of Thursday's match to earn a berth in in the afternoon championship match vs UTEP. Â
The Miners, who finished 16 shots behind Louisiana Tech in stroke play, reached the title tilt by taking down the top-seeded Bulldogs by a 3-2 margin. Liberty finished its match by winning three of the five matches with only Hugo Trommetter picking up a win for the Kats and Ting-Wei Hsieh tying his match.Â
Trommetter took down LIberty's Reid by a 4&3 score for the Bearkat point and Hsieh tied Barbin. Meanwhile, each of the Kats' other matches were close, but the Flames were able to keep the Kats at bay.Â
Gene Chaikangwal and Josh German each dropped matches by 2nd &1 margins while Bret Gray fell 3&2.
