Kats control Mountaineers from opening tip

HUNTSVILLE — Sam Houston scored early and often to come away with a 105-54 victory over Schreiner in non-conference action at Johnson Coliseum on Saturday afternoon.

Senior Damon Nicholas Jr. lead the Bearkats (3-2) with a season-high 16 points as every player who saw action scored to lift Sam Houston to its second win in a row. Sophomore CJ Beaumont scored a career high 14 points, senior Po'Boigh King finished with 13, freshman Jacobe Coleman had 10 as did sophomore Jaxson Ford, who posted his first career double-double with 10 points and 10 boards.

The Kats shot lights out, hitting 56 percent of their shots from floor and dominating in the paint by outscoring the Mountaineers 54-22. Sam Houston also held Schreiner to under 28 percent shooting on the other end.

The Mountaineers hit a 3-pointer to keep it a game at 53-28 coming out of the half but King put an end to any kind of comeback attempt. He three straight 3s around another Schreiner jumper to put the Bearkats in command at 62-30 five minutes into the second half.

Sophomore Justin Begg, who added seven points, hit back-to-back shots including a 3 to put Sam Houston up 5-0 in the first minute of the contest. Beaumont, Coleman, Nicholas and senior Veljko Ilic all added baskets as the Kats built a 16-1 lead before the Mountaineer finally scored on a free throw at the 13:42 mark of the opening period.

Schreiner wasn't going away. The Mountaineers took advantage of some miscues to chip away at the lead to make it 20-10 thanks to a 9-4 run.

The Kats responded with an 11-0 run to retake control. King and sophomore Isaiah Manning, who scored eight, made consecutive baskets, with Manning hitting a pair of 3s along with one from freshman Jacob Walker, who scored nine, to push the lead back to 41-19.

Beaumont closed out the half by going 2 for 2 at the free throw line to send Sam Houston into the break leading by 24.

The Bearkats will head out West to take part in the Holiday Hoops Classic at Idaho Central Arena on Nov. 26-28 in Boise.
