Kats win season opener

HUNTSVILLE — The Sam Houston women's basketball team blew by Southwestern Christian in the second half to win their first game of the season, 58-39, at Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum on Monday night.  

The Bearkats (1-0) led held just a 23-22 lead at the break, but wore down the Eagles (2-1) in the second half to register the double-digit victory, forcing 35 turnovers which they converted into 23 points.  

Pop Inmon and Deborah Ogayemi each finished with double-doubles, while Esther Rodellar reached double figures for the first time in her career with 11 points and a pair of 3-point buckets. Inmon led all Bearkat scorers with 13 points and 11 rebounds, while Ogayemi had 10 points and 10 rebounds.  

The Kats shot just 26.9 percent from the field, but dominated on the glass with 32 offensive rebounds while only allowing a pair of second-chance opportunities to the Eagles in the game.  

The game was the 99th career victory at Sam Houston for head coach Ravon Justice who now needs one more victory to become the third SHSU coach in program history with 100 victories.
