WACO — Sam Houston opened the Baylor Invitational with losses to UNT and CBU on Friday at Getterman Stadium.
The Bearkats (7-9) jumped ahead early in both games but fell due to big hits by the Mean Green and Lancers.
North Texas 4, Sam Houston 2
Kendall Daniel (2-2) started in the circle for the Kats, pitching 4 2/3 innings and allowing three runs on five hits. Tiffany Sanchez entered in relief but gave up one run on two hits.
Sam Houston grabbed an early lead thanks to the bat of Brodie Quinlan. She hit her fourth home run of the season, driving in Samantha Graeter to give the Kats a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the first inning.
UNT took control from there, scoring three more runs the rest of the way.
CBU 6, Sam Houston 2
Amy Abke (2-3) started for the Kats, pitching 3 1/3 innings and allowing six runs on nine hits. Abigail Young entered in relief, holding the Lancers to just two hits.
The Bearkats got on the board in the second inning with a Kyla Heine RBI and capitalized on a CBU error when Heine scored on a throwing error by the catcher.
Brodie Quinlan led the team with two hits, while four other Kats recorded one.
Sam Houston will turn around and face Baylor at 12:30 p.m. Saturday. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
