SMYRNA, Tenn. — With the first day of the Music City Classic in the books Friday, Sam Houston is right in the mix, standing in fifth place heading into the weekend.
The Bearkats posted a 4-1 record on the day, notching wins over Indianapolis, McKendree, Belmont Abbey and William Smith. Youngstown State leads the overall pin count with 5,282, followed by Vanderbilt (5,192), North Carolina A&T (5,172), Jacksonville State (5,148) and Sam Houston (5,101).
"Overall, today went very well. We had a great look in the fresh and we need to build off our early look and regroup for late transition," head coach Brad Hagen said. "Wins are the priority at this event which has a lot of twist and implications going into conference. We have a great opportunity to continue moving up the standings on Saturday as well as the opportunity to control our own destiny.
"We've done a great job rising to the occasion when we needed to and that's what will help us build into what's to come," he added. "We need to keep making shots and putting ourselves in position to win as well as close matches and this weekend is no different."
