
Kats fall in four to UTEP

HUNTSVILLE – The Sam Houston volleyball dropped its second straight match of its conference-opening weekend to UTEP on Saturday, 3-1 (25-17, 25-20, 25-21, 25-23) at Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum.

Chloe Monson led SHSU with 16 kills alongside Lauren Malone with 13 and Lillian Hamilton with a season-high 13 kills. Rachelle Reed had five blocks and Hamilton added two, while Avery Fowler picked up 30 assists.

The match was played in front of 1.069 fans at Johnson Coliseum, the highest attended Bearkat volleyball match in 2015 and the second most in the last 25 years.

The Bearkats kept the Miners on their toes, taking set three 25-21 after being down two. Miners rallied back and took set four 25-23.

UTEP hit .290 in Set 1 and .195 in Set 2 to take a 2-0 set lead. Kats had a four-point lead at the start of the opening set but were outscored hitting .143. They had things close at 16-16 in Set two before the Miners went on a three-point run to take the set 25-20.

Sam Houston took the lead in set three with Hamilton and Monson tearing up the Miner defense. Miners started to rally back late keeping the match tight at 19-18. An emphatic block by Reed and Fowler helped the Bearkats take set three 25-21.

Bearkats started set four with a service ace from Fowler and kills from Hamilton and Monson to take an early 9-4 lead. Miners chipped away the Bearkat lead keeping the match tight at 20-20 until they went on a four-point run to take the set 25-23.

Sam Houston hits the road to face New Mexico State next week on Friday and Saturday. Â
