HUNTSVILLE - Sam Houston has retained CSA Search & Consulting to assist in a national search for the university's next director of athletics.
The search follows the September announcement that longtime Director of Athletics, Bobby Williams will retire at the conclusion of the 2026-27 athletic season. Williams, who has served Sam Houston for 45 years and led the Athletics department since 1997, will remain in his position through June 1, 2027.
"Bobby's decision to announce his retirement well in advance gives us an opportunity to conduct a thoughtful and comprehensive national search while maintaining continuity for our student-athletes, coaches, staff and supporters," SHSU President Alisa White said. "This is an important leadership position for Sam Houston, particularly at a time of significant change across intercollegiate athletics. We are committed to identifying an exceptional leader who understands who we are, where we are headed and the opportunities ahead for Bearkat Athletics."
CSA Search & Consulting specializes in executive search and consulting for higher education and collegiate athletics and has worked with institutions across the country to identify athletics directors, coaches and other senior leaders.
"CSA brings extensive knowledge of collegiate athletics, a strong national network and significant experience conducting athletics leadership searches," White said. "Their expertise will help us develop a strong candidate pool and conduct a process focused on finding the right leader for Sam Houston."
The next director of athletics will inherit a department that has undergone significant transformation during Williams' tenure. Sam Houston has transitioned to the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision and Conference USA while investing significantly in athletics facilities, student-athlete support and the fan experience.
Williams has led the department through unprecedented competitive and academic accomplishments, including 52 conference and tournament championships, two NCAA national championships and more than $110 million in athletics facility construction and improvements.
"Our next director of athletics will have the opportunity to build upon a strong foundation while helping Sam Houston navigate a rapidly evolving collegiate athletics environment," White said. "We will be looking for a leader who shares our commitment to student-athlete success, competitive excellence and the broader mission of the university."
Williams will continue to lead Bearkat Athletics throughout the search and through the remainder of the 2026-27 athletic season.
Additional information regarding the search process and the position will be announced as it becomes available.
