HUNTSVILLE — Sam Houston kept Conference play alive Friday night, sweeping New Mexico State 3-0 at Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum.Â
The Bearkats (12-4, 3-0 CUSA) came out strong and never let the Aggies (7-9, 0-3 CUSA) find a rhythm, taking the opening set 25-19. Sam Houston carried that momentum into the second set, earning a 25-16 victory to move one set away from the sweep.Â
Bella Wood led the Bearkats offensively with 10 kills and added 11 digs for a double-double. Chloe Monson contributed eight kills and a team-high 17 digs, while Chelsea Butler added five kills and three assisted blocks.Â
Sam Houston continued to control the pace at the net, finishing the match with 36 kills and eight total blocks. Brenlin Garlitz helped keep the offense moving with 10 assists and added three kills on four attacks, while Lauren Pyle recorded 16 assists.Â
The Bearkats' defense also played a key role in keeping the Aggies out of its offensive rhythm. Sam Houston held the Aggies to a .041 hitting percentage while Shaelin White recorded nine digs and Wood and Monson combined for 28 digs.Â
New Mexico State battled back in the third set, pushing the Bearkats to the limit as the teams traded points late. Sam Houston ultimately held its ground and closed out the match 27-25 to secure the three-set sweep.Â
The Bearkats will look to complete the weekend sweep of New Mexico State when the teams meet again Saturday at 1 p.m. at Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum. The match will be streamed on ESPN+.Â
