HUNTSVILLE – Sam Houston dropped a 67–65 decision to FIU on Saturday afternoon at Johnson Coliseum, finishing the season without a win over the Panthers.
The Bearkats (15–8, 8–4 CUSA) used an 8–0 run in the second quarter to grab the lead, but FIU (15–9, 8–5 CUSA) answered with a strong third-quarter push to swing the momentum. The teams traded baskets down the stretch before foul trouble proved costly for Sam Houston in the final minutes.
Whitney Dunn led the Bearkats with 18 points, knocking down all four of her three-point attempts in the first half while adding four assists. Fanta Kone followed with 12 points and eight assists, while Nyla Inmon contributed 11 points and Annika Corcoran finished with 10.
FIU outscored Sam Houston 14–9 in the third quarter, but the Bearkats kept the contest within reach throughout the second half. Foul trouble in the final five minutes allowed the Panthers to build a five-point cushion at the free-throw line. Corcoran connected on a buzzer-beating three, but Sam Houston was unable to close the gap in the final possessions.
Defensively, the Bearkats forced 23 turnovers and converted them into 24 points, recording 11 steals in the contest. Kone paced the defensive effort with three steals.
