Malanga paces Kats in day one of Louisiana Classics

LAFAYETTE, La. – The Sam Houston men's golf team is tied for 13th at 1-over par heading into the final round of the Louisiana Classics at Oakbourne Country Club.
The Bearkats opened the tournament with a 2-over-par round before bouncing back with a 1-under-par performance in the second round to finish the day tied at 577 alongside Louisiana Tech and Southern Illinois.
Alex Malanga started strong with a 67 in the opening round, marking the third time this season he has posted that score. Malanga recorded six birdies in the first round and followed with a 71 in the afternoon, adding four more birdies to move into seventh place at 6-under par.
Grayson Petru opened his day with birdies on holes 12 and 16 on his way to a 73 in the first round. He responded with a 70 in round two after carding four birdies on the back nine and currently sits tied for 30th at 1-under par.
Sebastian May turned in steady rounds of 73 and 73 to sit at +2, placing him tied for 53rd after 36 holes. May totaled seven birdies on the day, including four in the opening round and three in the second.
Jackson Hymer opened with a 77, recording birdies on holes 1 and 14. He rebounded with a 73 in the second round, highlighted by three consecutive birdies across the first three holes and another on the 11th hole to sit at 6-over par.
Caleb Lumpkin rounded out the Bearkats lineup with rounds of 78 and 74, recording two birdies in each round to finish the day at 8-over par.
The final round of the Louisiana Classics will begin with a shotgun start at 7:39 a.m. on Tuesday. Live scoring will be available on Scoreboard by Clippd, with coverage streamed on ESPN+.
