Kone and Ogayemi earns All-Conference honors

DALLAS – Sam Houston seniors Fanta Kone and Deborah Ogayemi were named to the Conference USA All-Conference teams on Monday.
Kone earned First Team All-Conference honors after leading the Bearkats in scoring at 13.3 points per game. She recorded 19 double-figure scoring performances this season and ranks among the conference leaders in several statistical categories, including first in assists per game (4.9) and first in minutes per game (35.0).
Kone was also named to the All-Defensive Team and earned Conference USA Defensive Player of the Year honors. She leads CUSA in steals per game (3.5), which ranks eighth nationally, and sits eighth in program history in career steals with 189.
Her standout season also earned the Bearkats' only Conference USA Player of the Week honor this year after a dominant performance against Arkansas–Pine Bluff in which she set a CUSA single-game record with 12 steals, the second-most steals recorded by any player in the nation this season.
Kone and Ogayemi each recorded a career-high 23 points this season, helping the Bearkats secure their second home sweep of conference play with victories over UTEP and New Mexico State to close out the regular season.
Ogayemi was named to the All-Conference Second Team after another strong season for the Bearkats. She posted seven double-doubles this year, including three consecutive double-doubles to open conference play against Louisiana Tech, Liberty, and Delaware.
She ranks 14th in Conference USA in scoring at 12.2 points per game while leading the Bearkats on the glass with 184 total rebounds, averaging 7.4 rebounds per game, which ranks 11th in the conference.
Defensively, she ranks 30th nationally and third in CUSA in steals per game at 2.8 and is 18th in the conference in offensive rebounds per game at 3.9. She also ranks 10th in the conference in free throw percentage at 71.1, the best mark on the team.
A team captain this season, Ogayemi has provided leadership both on and off the court.
Kone and Ogayemi will help lead the fourth-seeded Bearkats as they face the fifth-seeded Liberty on Thursday at 11:30 a.m. in the quarterfinals of the CUSA Championship Tournament.
