Kats open CUSA Championships in 6th

TEXARKANA, Ark. – The Sam Houston men's golf team sits in sixth place at 2-over par following the opening round of the CUSA Championships on Monday at Texarkana Country Club.
The Bearkats hold a one-stroke lead over Middle Tennessee and are three strokes clear of Jacksonville State. UTEP and New Mexico State lead the field at 9-under par, five shots ahead of Liberty.
Caleb Lumpkin and Grayson Petru paced Sam Houston, each tying for fourth at 3-under par. Lumpkin opened his round with a birdie and added two more, including one on the par-5 second hole, to finish with a 69. Petru got off to a strong start with back-to-back birdies on holes 16 and 17 and added two more later in the round, continuing his consistent play.
Jackson Hymer is tied for 24th at 1-over par after carding a 73. He recorded four birdies on the day, three on the front nine and another on the par-4 17th.
Sebastian May sits in 52nd at 7-over par after posting a 79, while Alex Malanga is 54th at 9-over following an 81.
The second round of the CUSA Championships is set to begin at 8 a.m. Tuesday, with Sam Houston teeing off at 9 a.m. alongside Western Kentucky and Kennesaw State. Live scoring will be available via Scoreboard by Clippd.
