Aggies edge Kats on Thursday

CONROE — The Sam Houston women's tennis team dropped a narrow, 4-3, dual-match decision to NM State on Thursday at April Sound CC.

The match was originally scheduled to be played at the Beckner Tennis Center in Huntsville, but was moved indoors due to inclement weather and court conditions.

The Aggies (8-8) were able to get out in front early, claiming the doubles point with wins on the Nos. 1 and 3 courts.

Sam Houston immediately fought back on the singles courts, however, as Christine Jevicky took little time to down Emma Petton in straight sets on Court 3 and Nayuma Subba did the same on Court 1 to give the Kats a 2-1 lead.

But NM State moved to within a point of clinching with wins at Nos. 2 and 4 before Ella Fitcher closed out Nadia Nemeth in straight sets at No. 5. That win pushed the clinching point to No. 6 where the Aggies' Marielle Gelbke was able to edge Isabella Garza in three sets.

Sam Houston will close the regular season on Saturday vs Kennesaw State. The match is currently scheduled for an 11:00 a.m. first serve, weather permitting.
