Butler named CUSA Defensive Player of the Week

DALLAS – Sam Houston middle blocker Chelsea Butler was named Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week on Monday after helping the Bearkats sweep a pair of road matches at Kennesaw State to open league play.Â
Butler totaled 14 blocks across the two four-set wins, averaging 1.75 per set. She had six blocks, including a solo block, in Friday's victory before adding eight block assists Saturday.Â
She also contributed on the attack, putting down 25 kills while hitting .409 for the weekend. Butler had 14 kills on .476 hitting Friday and added 11 kills Saturday as Sam Houston opened CUSA play 2-0.Â
Her play at the net has the Kats holding opponents to just .166 hitting overall this season, the best mark in CUSA. Individually, Butler currently ranks tied for fourth in the league with an average of 1.00 blocks per set. Â
Butler and the Bearkats return to Johnson Coliseum this weekend for a pair of matches against NM State, beginning Friday night. Both matches against the Aggies are scheduled to be aired on ESPN+.Â
