ARLINGTON — The Sam Houston volleyball team dropped three straight sets to Army in the opening match of the Maverick Classic Friday morning at College Park Center.Â
The Bearkats and Black Knights traded points and momentum throughout the match, with Sam Houston staying within striking distance in each set. Army took the first two sets, 25-21, before the Bearkats mounted a late push in the third.Â
Sam Houston took an early lead in the third set and forced a deuce at 24-24, but Army scored the next two points to claim the set, 26-24, and complete the sweep.Â
Chloe Monson led the Bearkats' attack with 15 kills. Shalein White anchored the Sam Houston defense with 18 digs, while Chelsea Butler and Annika Brooks recorded four blocks apiece at the net. Setter Brenlin Garlitz added a season-high 21 assists.Â
Army's defense held the Bearkats to a .195 hitting percentage, while the Black Knights hit .252 for the match. The Bearkats and Black Knights each recorded seven blocks, but Army held a 51-45 advantage in digs.Â
Sam Houston continues the Maverick Classic on Saturday with a pair of matches. The Bearkats face Kent State at 2 p.m. before taking on tournament host UT Arlington at 6 p.m.Â
