Delaney Named SLC Player Of The Week

FRISCO – Senior Josh Delaney has been named the Southland Conference Player of the Week, per a release on Monday afternoon by league officials.
It is the first such honor for Delaney in his career, and the third Bearkat do so this year, joining his brother Cameron and teammate Kai Mitchell who have also done so.
Delaney was huge for the Bearkats in two overtime wins last week, helping Sam Houston State clinch at least a share of its first SLC title since 2009-10, and secure the No. 1 overall seed in the Southland Conference Tournament.
The senior guard averaged 20.5 points and 7.0 assists per game for the Kats, hitting 61.5 percent of his shots from beyond the arc.
He had 11 points and seven assists in a comeback victory over Nicholls on Wednesday, keeping the Kats with a two-game cushion in the league standings. Delaney then was even bigger on Saturday, tying a career high with 30 points to go with seven assists in a 119-13 double OT win over Houston Baptist. He nailed six of eight tries from distance and had 13 of his 30 points in the overtime periods.
For the season Delaney ranks fourth in the league with 4.6 assists per game, but in conference play no player has put up a better mark than his 5.9 per contest. He is averaging 12.0 points per game in SLC-only games, and 10.6 points per game for the year. He is also second on the team with 51 made 3-point baskets, shooting at a 34.7 percent clip from deep and 84.7 percent from the foul line.
Delaney and the Bearkats have three more games left in the regular season and with one more victory would clinch the SLC title outright. They travel to New Orleans to face the Privateers on ESPN3.
