Brittany Mason enters her ninth season as an assistant coach at Sam Houston in 2026–27. She joined the Bearkat staff before the 2018–19 season after spending two seasons alongside head coach Ravon Justice at Prairie View A&M.
Mason helped the Bearkats return to the postseason in 2025–26, finishing 18–13 and earning the program’s second WNIT appearance and first since 2013. Picked seventh in the Conference USA preseason poll, Sam Houston tied for third with an 11–7 league record and earned the No. 4 seed in the conference tournament, its highest seed since joining CUSA. The 18 victories were the program’s most since the 2019–20 season.
The Bearkats continued to excel defensively, leading CUSA in steals and turnovers forced in both 2024–25 and 2025–26. In 2025–26, Sam Houston collected 419 steals, averaging 13.5 per game, and forced 25.0 turnovers per contest while also leading the league with a plus-7.32 turnover margin. The Kats forced at least 30 turnovers eight times, including 30 against Portland in the opening round of the WNIT.
That defensive success has been a consistent feature of Mason’s tenure in Huntsville. Sam Houston finished fourth nationally in turnovers forced in both 2018–19 and 2019–20, fifth in 2020–21 and sixth in 2024–25. The Bearkats also ranked sixth nationally in steals per game in 2019–20, 12th in 2020–21 and 13th in 2024–25.
Sam Houston’s 2025–26 season included significant individual recognition. Fanta Kone became the program’s first CUSA Defensive Player of the Year and earned first-team all-conference and all-defensive honors, while Tiffany Ogayemi was named to the all-conference second team. Kone also set the CUSA single-game record with 12 steals against Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
In Mason’s first season at Sam Houston, the Bearkats finished 16–13 overall and 11–7 in Southland Conference play. Their 12-win improvement was the third largest nationally and the best among programs with a first-year head coach, helping Justice earn Southland Coach of the Year honors. The Kats followed with a 19–10 record and a 14–6 league mark in 2019–20, setting program Division I records for overall and conference victories. Amber Leggett earned first-team all-Southland and all-defensive recognition that season, while Faith Cook was named the league’s Newcomer of the Year.
Before arriving in Huntsville, Mason spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Prairie View A&M from 2016–18. In her first season, the Panthers recorded a school-record five nonconference victories and went 11–2 at home. Alexus Parker earned second-team all-SWAC and second-team BOXTOROW All-America honors. Prairie View followed with a 12–6 SWAC record in 2017–18 and advanced to the conference tournament semifinals for the first time in three seasons.
Mason previously served as an assistant coach at Texas A&M–Kingsville for two seasons from 2014–16. Her time with the Javelinas followed three seasons on the Houston staff, where she served as a graduate assistant in 2011–12, video coordinator in 2012–13 and director of operations beginning in May 2013. Her video responsibilities included practice preparation, scouting reports and game-film editing.
A native of La Porte, Texas, Mason was a four-year letterwinner and three-year starter at Houston. As a senior in 2010–11, she helped the Cougars finish 26–6, go undefeated in Conference USA play at 16–0 and reach the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2005. Known for her defense, she averaged 5.5 points and 5.0 rebounds that season and finished her career with averages of 4.0 points and 4.3 rebounds. She appeared in 119 games with 70 starts and logged 2,578 minutes.
Mason earned her bachelor’s degree in health from Houston in August 2010 and later completed a master’s degree in education with an emphasis in sports and fitness administration.
