David Beaver, formerly assistant coach at Connors State College in Warner, Oklahoma, has made an immediate impact on head coach Brenda Nichols’ women’s basketball program at Sam Houston State. In his first year, Beaver oversaw a recruiting effort that has brought seven talented new freshman and one junior college transfer into the Bearkat program.
Beaver joined the Kat staff in 2007 after being part of teams that have produced winning records seven consecutive seasons.
Last year, he helped direct Connors State to a 17-13 season mark, an improvement of six victories for the Cowgirls from their previous season. The mark represented Connors State’s first winning record in three years. Beaver’s primary duties at Connors involved scouting, recruiting, coaching the offense, and working with perimeter players.
Beaver was assistant coach for four seasons at Redlands Community College in El Reno, Oklahoma. He served as top assistant and recruiting coordinator as the Cougars won 86 games, four conference titles, four regional playoff championships, and made NJCAA national tournament appearances.
"David Beaver has done an outstanding job with our recruiting, post development, scheduling, opponent scouting, and film breakdown and editing," Nichols said. "He accomplishs all of his duties with a passion and fierce determination."
Beaver served as head coach at Collinsville High School in Collinsville, Texas, in 2004-05. He directed the Pirates to their only winning season in the past 25 years and the team’s highest district finish since 1982. Taking over a team that had won 17 games the previous three seasons, Beaver produced a 15-13 record and a third place finish in one of the state’s toughest districts. Collinsville also made its first state tournament championship game appearance since 1982 and beat a state-ranked Top 10 team for the first time in school history. Beaver’s team also finished in the Top 10 in scoring offense and team defense of all schools in the entire Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, regardless of classification. Beaver also produced five all-district selections, more than the previous five years combined.
Beaver began his coaching career as graduate assistant coach under former head coach James Smith at Northwestern State in 1999-2000. He helped guide the Demons to a runner-up finish in the Southland Conference.
Beaver is a native of Arlington, Texas, where he attended Lamar High School. He earned a bachelor’s degree in music education from Northwestern State (LA) in 1999, and his master’s degree in sport management from the University of Oklahoma in 2003.
