David Wood enters his second season as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Sam Houston in 2027. He joined the Bearkat staff in July 2025 after successful coaching stops at the NCAA Division II, Division III and junior college levels.
Wood came to Sam Houston after leading Odessa College to a 49–17 record in his lone season as head coach in 2025. The Wranglers went 30–6 in Western Junior College Athletic Conference play, captured their first league championship since 2017 and earned Wood WJCAC Coach of the Year honors.
Before Odessa, Wood served as interim head coach at San Jacinto College in 2024, guiding the Ravens to a 40–21 record.
Wood previously spent 2 seasons as head coach at the University of St. Thomas in Houston. He led the Celts to their first SCAC Tournament appearance in 2022 and a then-program-record 20–18 finish in 2023. His teams also maintained a team GPA above 3.0 each semester.
From 2011–2021, Wood served as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at St. Edward’s University in Austin. He worked with both the pitching staff and offense while helping the Hilltoppers earn 6 Heartland Conference championships, 7 NCAA regional appearances and a South Central Regional championship. St. Edward’s finished third at the 2013 NCAA Division II World Series.
During his time overseeing the pitching staff, Wood’s teams produced 4 of the 5 lowest ERAs in school history. The Hilltoppers established a school record with a 2.57 ERA in 2014 and ranked sixth nationally in that category.
A native of Long Island, N.Y., Wood began his collegiate playing career at Stony Brook, where he earned America East All-Rookie honors. He transferred to Temple College and earned second team all-region recognition as both a pitcher and first baseman before playing his final 2 seasons at Texas State.
Wood earned second team All-Southland Conference honors in 2007 and finished the season with school records of 97 hits, 77 RBI and 161 total bases. He led the conference in hits and RBI that season.
Following college, Wood played 3 seasons in the Kansas City Royals organization. He earned Arizona League Player of the Year honors in 2007 and played for Burlington, Wilmington and the Class A Burlington Bees during his professional career.
Wood holds a bachelor’s degree in applied arts and sciences with a coaching emphasis from Texas State. He and his wife, Randi, have 3 children, Reid, Lukas and Wrenley.
