Kyle Simonds enters his fifth season with Sam Houston in 2027 and his fourth as an assistant coach, overseeing the Bearkat pitching staff.
Simonds was a key part in developing Ryan Peterson into one of the nation’s top collegiate pitching prospects in 2026. Peterson earned first team All-CUSA honors after recording a 3.38 ERA, 105 strikeouts and a .236 opponent batting average. He became the sixth Bearkat pitcher to reach 100 strikeouts in a season and the 10th to reach 200 in a career.
Peterson was selected by the Miami Marlins with the No. 71 overall pick in the Competitive Balance B round of the 2026 MLB Draft, becoming Sam Houston’s highest-selected pitcher since Kevin Renz in 1984. He also earned recognition on national Pitcher of the Year watch lists and threw a complete-game, 1-hit shutout against WKU, the program’s first complete-game shutout since 2017.
Simonds spent his first season with the Bearkats as director of baseball operations in 2023, when Sam Houston finished 39–25, won the WAC Tournament championship and advanced to the NCAA Baton Rouge Regional.
Before joining Sam Houston, Simonds served as pitching coach at UIW during the 2022 season. The Cardinals led the Southland Conference in strikeouts looking with 126, ranked second with 455 total strikeouts and posted a league-best 2.38 strikeout-to-walk ratio.
Simonds previously spent 4 seasons on Rob Childress’ staff at Texas A&M, serving as a graduate student manager in 2018 and 2019 before becoming the volunteer assistant coach for the 2020 and 2021 seasons. He worked with pitchers and catchers and assisted with scouting reports.
In 2019, Texas A&M set a school record with 673 strikeouts. The Aggies led the nation in strikeout-to-walk ratio at 3.33, ranked second in strikeouts per 9 innings at 10.9 and finished third nationally with a 3.21 ERA. During his time on the staff, Simonds worked with future MLB Draft selections including Asa Lacy, John Doxakis, Christian Roa and Bryce Miller.
A native of Grand Island, Neb., Simonds pitched at Texas A&M in 2015 and 2016. He earned Perfect Game/Rawlings honorable mention All-America recognition as a senior after going 11–3 with a 2.61 ERA and 80 strikeouts in 17 starts. His senior season included a no-hitter against Vanderbilt on May 7, 2016.
Simonds finished his Aggie career with a 14–5 record, 2 saves, a 2.53 ERA and 112 strikeouts in 152.2 innings. Before Texas A&M, he pitched at Hutchinson CC, where he earned NJCAA Division I National Pitcher of the Year and first team All-America honors in 2014 after going 13–0 with 103 strikeouts. He was inducted into Hutchinson’s Blue Dragon Quarterback Club Hall of Fame in 2024.
The Washington Nationals selected Simonds in the 14th round of the 2016 MLB Draft. He pitched 2 seasons in the organization, reaching Single-A Hagerstown, where he went 5–0 with 57 strikeouts in 61.0 innings in 2017.
Simonds earned his bachelor’s degree in agricultural leadership and development from Texas A&M in 2016 and completed his master’s degree in recreation, parks and tourism sciences with an emphasis in youth development.
He and his wife, Hannah, have 2 daughters, Kate and Garner.
