Jason Barfield serves as Sam Houston State associate athletic director for broadcasting and digital media.

His duties include overseeing and scheduling of ESPN productions and all live video streaming, video board operations, website video features and serves as the liaison for Bearkat radio and TV. He also serves as the sport administrator for soccer and bowling. 

Barfield was promoted to his current position on July 1, 2022, after serving 15 years in the media relations department, including the last six as Associate AD for Media Relations. Barfield has been a member of the athletic department since 2005.

While working in the media relations office, he assisted with the promotion of all 17 Bearkat sports, including the primary contact for men’s and women’s golf and bowling. In addition to the media relations responsibilities, he has overseen the implementation of four new video boards that have been installed at Bowers Stadium, Johnson Coliseum, Don Sanders Stadium and the Bearkat Softball Complex.

In 2019, Barfield played an integral part in the design and construction of Bearkat Sports Network Studios in the all new Woodforest Bank Athletic Center. The new facility includes a 500 square foot television and podcast studio as well as a central control room for games and events at Bowers Stadium, Don Sanders Stadium, Pritchett Field and the Bearkat Softball Complex. 

In 2008, Barfield started what has now become the Bearkat Sports Network, streaming more than 60 SHSU sporting events live each year. In 2016, he began the transition to streaming live events for ESPN.

Barfield has also served as the play-by-play voice for Sam Houston baseball and soccer as well as working on the radio broadcasts for football and basketball. He has also handled broadcast duties on the ESPN productions serving in both the play-by-play and analyst roles.

Previously, he served as sports editor of the Huntsville Item where he was honored 13 times for state and regional writing and design awards. He formally was sports coordinator for the Baytown Sun.

Barfield graduated from Sam Houston in 2000 with a degree in Radio/Television and a minor in Journalism. While a student Barfield was involved with Channel 7 News as both a sports anchor and sports director. He also called Bearkat football, basketball and baseball games for 90.5 FM and was a member of the sports staff at The Houstonian, the school’s student newspaper.

A 1995 graduate of Barbers Hill High School, Barfield and his wife Patty, a 1999 and 2017 Sam Houston graduate, have two children, daughter Kenna and son Ryan.
