Welch-Nichols was the first Sam Houston women's basketball player to earn All-Conference and Southland All-Tournament honors in the same season. The leading scorer for SHSU's first two Southland women's basketball teams, she averaged 17.8 points per game, the second highest career scoring average for the Bearkats. In 2006, she returned to her alma mater as head women's basketball coach. She earned Southland Conference “Coach of the Year” honors after leading the program to its first league title in 2013.
