JACKSONVILLE, Ala. - Landyn Locke and DJ Bailey each threw a second-half touchdown pass as Sam Houston fell 47-14 to Jax State on Saturday night at AmFirst Stadium. It was the first game for the Bearkats under co-interim head coaches Freddie Aughtry-Lindsay and Eric Raisbeck.
Sam Houston (1-8, 0-5 Conference USA) stopped the Gamecocks on fourth down at the Bearkat 9-yard line and held them scoreless in the first quarter. Jax State (7-2, 5-0 CUSA) opened the scoring with 8:35 left in the second quarter and took a 17-0 lead into halftime.
The Gamecocks extended their lead on a 67-yard touchdown pass from Caden Creel to Deondre Johnson on their opening drive of the second half. Locke answered with a 64-yard touchdown pass to Chris Reed to cut the lead to 24-7 with 13:43 left in the third quarter. Locke finished 16-of-21 for 126 yards.
Bailey led a 10-play, 75-yard scoring drive in the fourth quarter. He connected with Grady O'Neill for 33 yards and found him again on fourth-and-5 for a 7-yard touchdown with 7:21 remaining. Bailey went 5-of-7 for 63 yards.
Sam Houston returns to Bowers Stadium to host Kennesaw State on Nov. 14 at 1 p.m. CT.
