Dennis was one of the most decorated sprinters in Sam Houston history, dominating the 400-meter hurdles in the Southland Conference during his time as a Bearkat. He helped the Kats win the Southland Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championship in 2005 as a freshman when he placed third in the 400 hurdles and was a member of the gold-medal winning 4x400-meter relay team.   

Dennis would go on to win the 400 hurdles at the SLC championships three straight seasons from 2007-09 and won the 4x400 relay championship again in 2008. At the SLC Indoor championships in 2005 and 2007, he also was on the winning 4x400 relay teams. He finished second at the NCAA Regional Finals in the 400 hurdles in 2009, and placed 14th and 13th, respectively, in the event at the NCAA Championships in 2008 and 2009.
