Norrell played for the Bearkat baseball team from 1971 to 1973. He posted a 17-6 record in his career and still holds the fifth-best career ERA with a 1.78 mark.

1973 was Norrell's best year, going 8-2 on the year and earning NAIA All-American honorable mention honors. That season, Norrell started the opening game of the District IV playoffs and shutout Southwestern University. He closed the year with a 1.34 ERA.

In his career, Norrell fanned 158 batters in 211 innings of work while walking just 50 batters.
