McNeese State 35, Sam Houston 13

HUNTSVILLE - The fifth-ranked McNeese State Cowboys defeated the Bearkats 35-13 at 1998 Sam Houston Homecoming. Cowboy quarterback Blake Prejean passed for 212 yards and one touchdown and running back Sherif Lott rushed for 71 yards including three touchdowns. A defensive play was the turning point of the contest however. Trailing 14-3 in the second quarter, the Bearkats appeared to be in scoring position after Marcus Parks recovered a Cowboy fumble inside McNeese 30-yard line. But Joe Judge picked up a Sam Houston fumble and returned it 74 yards for a touchdown to put the Cowboys up 21-3 just 3:19 before intermission. Wide receiver Matt Dominguez tied a Sam Houston State school record with 10 catches. Clay Lowry originally set the record with 10 catches against East Texas State in 1978. Dominguez gained 149 yards receiving in the McNeese game. Ryan Klaus had another strong punting performance with a 45.3 average including a 51-yard punt.
