LOUISIANA - Down 21-0 early in the second quarter and 33-14 with 9:19 to play in the third quarter, the scrappy Bearkats fought back to tie the game 33-33 before Kyle Leisher kicked the game-winning 38-yard field goal for Nicholls State with 4:03 to play. The game was played on Thursday night before a seven-state Fox Sports Southwest television audience. Sam Houston rushing game, which had not totaled 100 yards in the last two games combined, not going again, rolling up 196 yards on 51 carries. Joe Rauls rushed 20 times for 126 yards including a season best 65-yard run to the one-yard line. Elmore Armstrong added 76 yards on 22 carries including three short TD runs. Armstrong thus became the 25th player in Sam Houston history to gain more than 1,000 career yards rushing. Quarterback Matt Buss put on a gutty display in bringing the Bearkats back in the second half. Buss passed for 192 yards including a 33-yard touchdown pass to Jonnathan Cooper. Matt Doninguez caught six passes for 86 yards. Early mistakes put the Bearkats in a deep hole. Trailing 7-0, the Bearkats drove 72 yards to the eight yard line where Buss threw a touchdown pass to Cooper but had the play nullified for illegal procedure because a player lined up in the wrong formation. The next play, Aaron Smith picked off a Buss pass and returned the interception 94 yards for a touchdown. Another interception set up a Nicholls TD late in the second quarter. The Bearkats defense shut down Nicholls in the third quarter and the Kats ralled for 19 second half points.
