Sam Houston 31, South West Texas 24

HUNTSVILLE - Redshirt freshman running back Joe Rauls rushed 32 times for 147 yards and the winning touchdown as Sam Houston closed its 1998 football season with a 31-24 victory over Southwest Texas State Saturday. Redshirt freshman quarterback Matt Buss completed 18 of 23 passes for 184 yards and three touchdowns. Sophomore wide receiver Matt Dominguez caught passes for 59 yards and two touchdowns. His seven catches gave him 57 receptions for the season, a Sam Houston school record. Larry Nixon caught four passes for 50 yards and a score. A key defensive play came early in the fourth quarter. Southwest Texas State, ahead 24-17, faced fourth and one at the Bearkat 29 yard line. Defensive lineman Matt Howell stopped a quarterback sneak for no gain. The Kats rallied for two fourth quarter scores and the victory.
